Sapporo, the iconic Japanese beer brand, has teamed up with Sucker Punch, the developers behind the much-anticipated game, Ghost of Yotei. This collaboration has resulted in the creation of special beer packaging that ties in with the game’s upcoming launch. The Ghost of Yotei beer packaging features popular Sapporo varieties in specially designed cans and bottles, now available in stores across the US.
While the beer itself remains the same, the packaging is adorned with a QR code that players can scan to unlock an exclusive in-game item once Ghost of Yotei releases on October 2 for PS5. This in-game reward, known as “The Charm of Hokkyokusei,” showcases Sapporo’s famous star logo. The term “Hokkyokusei” translates to the North Star in Japanese, linking back to Sapporo’s history, as the company’s original brewmaster is said to have followed the North Star to Germany to learn the art of brewing.
In the game, equipping this charm provides players with a unique advantage, offering a “minor chance” to avoid consuming ranged weapon ammo. Sapporo’s CEO, Zach Keeling, emphasized the inspirational connection between the brewmaster’s journey and the game’s protagonist, highlighting themes of defiance, discovery, and artistry that resonate with Japanese history and culture.
Sucker Punch’s Brian Fleming shared how the team’s visit to Japan included enjoying Sapporo beer, setting the stage for the partnership. Andrew Goldfarb from Sucker Punch expressed delight over the collaboration, reflecting on a joke made about a “Yotei Six Pack” that ultimately led to this perfect synergy.
Meanwhile, the developers of Ghost of Yotei revealed their excitement over the delay of GTA 6 to 2026, hinting at the possibility of multiple playable characters in their game. Additionally, a teaser hinted at the unveiling of Atsu’s character development, including a glimpse of his backside. The game promises to offer a rich and immersive experience for players, with over 40 new screenshots showcasing the stunning visuals and gameplay unique to this PS5 exclusive.
This innovative partnership between Sapporo and Sucker Punch underscores the growing trend of collaborations between gaming and consumer brands, offering players exclusive content and experiences that enhance their gameplay. By intertwining the history and legacy of Sapporo’s brewing tradition with the narrative of Ghost of Yotei, players are not only rewarded with in-game items but also invited to delve deeper into the cultural tapestry that enriches the gaming experience.
