Activision recently made a decision to pull the PC version of Call of Duty: WWII from its Game Pass platform shortly after the game’s release. The move was prompted by reports of serious hacking issues that were affecting players. While hacking problems are not uncommon in the Call of Duty franchise, the nature of the attacks in this instance was particularly concerning. Players were reportedly experiencing Remote Code Execution (RCE) attacks, which allowed hackers to take control of their PCs through security vulnerabilities.
These hacking incidents bore similarities to a previous security breach in Dark Souls 3 back in 2022, which resulted in the game being temporarily disabled to address the vulnerability. Prior to the removal of Call of Duty: WWII, players took to social media to share videos highlighting the hacking attacks they were facing while playing the game. One notable clip showed a player named “Wrioh” experiencing an RCE attack during a multiplayer session.
Activision, in response to the reports, issued a brief statement on Twitter on July 4 announcing the temporary offline status of Call of Duty: WWII on PC as they investigated the reported issue. The company did not provide a timeline for when the game would be reinstated on the platform.
Despite the removal of WWII, there are other Call of Duty titles still accessible to players. Games like Black Ops 6 and Warzone have introduced new content in Season 4 Reloaded, featuring fresh game modes, map variants, and even a limited-time Beavis and Butt-Head event. Furthermore, Call of Duty Mobile recently introduced a crossover event with Gundam, offering players unique limited-time modes.
Looking ahead, Call of Duty fans can anticipate the release of Black Ops 7 later this year on various platforms, including PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and PC. The full reveal of the game is expected to take place later in the summer.
As the gaming community awaits updates on the status of Call of Duty: WWII on PC, it serves as a reminder of the ongoing challenges faced by developers in maintaining the integrity and security of online gaming experiences. The incident underscores the importance of swift and decisive action to address security vulnerabilities to protect players’ privacy and gaming environments.
